JOGGING CHART FAQ

Date of FAQ: January 14, 2012.

Question #1: I hate record keeping, and hardly find the time to exercise. Why do I need a jogging chart and how will it help?

Answer #1: Memory is an unreliable source of information, and the least desirable method to store information for long-term analysis. The time needed to jot a number or a symbol on the chart is less then a few seconds a day. The weekly subtotal, a maximum of 7 numbers, is again a task of a few seconds. The longest time period spent at chart entries are the monthly tallies (perhaps 2 minutes a month), and the yearly totals are a few pleasant minutes recapping your year. The sense of accomplishment and self-esteem gained from your first annual chart venture will amply reward this small diligence, and, in direct proportion to the effort expended. The Jogging Chart is a tool to help organize your exercise regimen. Use it daily in good health.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Question #2: Yes . . . . But . . . . how exactly will it help? I have tried exercise plans before, and the whole idea just fades away in short order.

Answer #2: The Jogging Chart can focus your mind over long periods, if it is used, that is, if you mark it daily. Extended commitments have to survive continuous distractions. By committing to a daily act that takes only seconds instead of hours, that activity ( of marking an X on the chart) stands a reasonable chance of actually getting done. Each X says, I thought about it today, but couldn't fit it in - try again tomorrow. Of course the chart will show a lot more Xs then numbers, but so what! Anything that sticks in the mind will eventually work its magic. Hang the chart where you will see it daily like behind a closet or bathroom door - avoid sticking it in a drawer or file. Mark the Xs and they will ever so subtly nudge you out for a run.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Question #3: Why all the fuss to print one page. Why can't I just load the Jogging Chart into my browser window and click the print icon?

Answer #3: Simplicity is indeed desirable, however, occasionally there are mitigating circumstances. Not every one has the software for precision printing installed, or their scripting is turned off. Internet browsers do not print very well. Browsers are designed to deliver visual information over the Internet, printing web pages is only a secondary function. Your graphics card and video monitor expect data streams formatted differently then the data stream channeled to the printer. This disparity in functionality has led to the development of browser plugins to improve print quality. The PDF file format, and PDF reader plugin were developed to fill this need. The growing demand on-line for a variety of printed material is leading web designers to use the PDF format to deliver precision printing over the Internet. Because of the wide range of equipment attached to the Internet, and the one-size-fits-all approach of plugins, Internet precision printing is still fairly crude. PDF is a proprietary file format that is ever so slowly becoming Open Source. The use of PDF files and the plugin is merely the best workaround of a bad situation.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Question #4: OK, I get the picture, but a jogging chart is a simple document, just a few straight lines. How hard can it be to print one page? Why do I have to fiddle with print settings?

Answer #4: The problem is to print the jogging chart over the entire page, right out to the edges of the paper. If the chart is too small, the individual boxes become cramped, and the chart's usability diminishes. Most programs that print use headers, footers and wide margins by default. Print programs must be modified manually by the user. This is why we print from the Internet using a one-click specialized program, and download the Jogging Chart from the Internet to print off-line as a last resort.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Question #5: Ouch. My head hurts from all this confusing information.. What's the best way to get the Jogging Chart?

Answer #5: Follow the directions on the Jogging Chart web site. First try printing with the PDF plugin (which many, but not all computers have installed.) This is the easiest option. If that fails, visit the Help Center

( http://www.tiraco.com/joggingchart/index.html ) and try the print methods listed there. If all else fails, download the files using the DOWNLOAD link, and print the Jogging Chart off-line.

Question #6: I have downloaded the Jogging Chart files. What do I do now?

Answer #6: If you downloaded the zip file, we assume you have an unzip program and know how to use it.

What follows are instructions for the .zip file:

First go to the directory that contains the downloaded file,

**Double click on the chart .zip file.

Actually, nothing will be installed. Several files will be extracted from the zip file and placed in the directory you have chosen.

**Open the JoggingChart JPG file into your graphic editor.

( Go to FILE --> Open --> JoggingChart12xxx.jpg)

Do not manually resize, the Chart was made to fit on a standard 8.5 x 11 or poster size 11 x 17 sheet of paper.

**Now print the chart.

If you are using the FREE IfanView Graphics Viewer to print;

Go to FILE > Print. A print window will pop up. Check that letter size paper and Portrait orientation are selected. Click the OK button. A second print window will pop up. Select the"BEST FIT TO PAGE" option and nothing else. Click the Print button again. A full page image of the Jogging Chart will print.

If you are using the Paint Shop Pro graphics editor to print;

Go to FILE > Print Preview. A preview window will pop up showing how the chart will print. Click the SETUP button at the top left of the screen. A second Page Setup window will pop up. Check that letter size paper and Portrait orientation are selected. Make sure the "FIT TO PAGE" check box to the right is selected. Click the OK button. A full page image of the Jogging Chart will print.

If you are using the Adobe Photoshop graphics editor to print;

Go to FILE > Print With Preview. A Print window will pop up showing how the chart will print. Click the PAGE SETUP button at the right side of the screen. A second Page Setup window will pop up. Check that letter size paper and Portrait orientation are selected. Click OK and return to the first Print window. Make sure the "SCALE TO FIT MEDIA" check box to the right is selected. Also remove the check from the "SHOW BOUNDING BOX" option just below the Scale To Fit Media check box. Click the Print button. A full page image of the Jogging Chart will print.

Question #7: Can I print the Jogging Chart from my word processor instead of a graphics editor?

Answer #7: Yes. You can import the JoggingChart12xxx.jpg file into a word processor likeWordPerfect or Microsoft Word and print the chart from there. However, word processors have large margins by default. Your Jogging Chart may print much smaller then if you used a graphics editor. Before printing, you should reset the page margins to .05" and then print.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Question #8: I tried printing the jogging Chart, but the edge was cut off, or it printed on two pages instead of one. What can I do?

Answer #8: Try printing the Jogging Chart again, only this time resize (or resample) the chart smaller. The reduced size Jogging Chart is another workaround for a bad situation, and should be used only as a last resort.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Question #9: What are the other files used for that are included in the download package?

Answer #9: The download package should contain 9 files.

Question #10: I have printed the chart and the instructions, now what should I do with the files.

Answer #10: You can safely delete the entire directory with the 9 download files. They do not write to the Registry and will not leave any traces behind. Their purpose was to give you a printed, full-page Jogging Chart for the year 2012.

Warning: Exercise at your own risk. Stress and over-exertion can be harmful, dangerous, and even deadly. Use your head as well as your feet. Remember, repetition not stress is best. Enjoy all Things In Moderation.
