Forest Hills Legal Defense Fund
In September 1997, the FHLDF went to court -the expense shared by 200
homeowners of Forest Hills and Glendale NY - contending the transfer of public
property by New York State, which would allow large scale development within
the Forest Park area by the Home Depot Company. Cited in the court papers
were: the lack of environmental studies required under New York State Law, and
to consider the issue of toxic waste, newly discovered on the property. (The
community asked the courts to slowdown the hasty, and in our opinion,
reckless cleanup plan, or, as occurred in the wake of the court's decision,
no cleanup plan at all.
) The court dismissed the community with the wave of a hand.
Bear in mind that the chemicals found are thousands of times the limits needed
to cause cancer, birth defects, and serious respiratory illness.
